Frame your life through our lens

Baby

Baby Joey!

Here are a few shots of the ADORABLE Joey! I hope to do some more shoots of this great family in the future!

Thanks again for letting my photograph your little angel!

Sleepy girl in momma’s (and daddy’s) arms

Look at those sweet little eyes! It just melts my heart looking back at some of these shots. We hope your heart melts too!

This little gal became very sleepy about halfway through our photo shoot, and I don’t mind that at all. Sleeping babies are so sweet to photograph.

She was fighting it a little bit here and then…

Out!  :)

Shh! Thanks little cutie for photographing so well!

Schenley Park overlooking the city skyline

We did this family shoot in Schenley Park by Overlook Drive where you could see the Pitt Cathedral of Learning and the Pittsburgh skyline in the distance.  As always, we got some great looks from the kids, and the parents weren’t too shabby either! :)

Blowing bubbles is never a bad idea when doing family photos.

What a cheeser! And what a great smile to finish off the post! It was an honor to do your photos, and we finished just in time because just an hour or so later it started to rain!

Little Micaele

Michaele is our newest little nephew and certainly a cutie. He was rather easy to photograph for a newborn because he’s got a pretty strong neck for being so young so he didn’t do a whole lot of face planting like the usual baby. We loved photographing him and stuffing him into this tiny suitcase for our first shot.

For this entire shoot we used studio lighting. Just a pair of SB-600 strobes facing each other in a cross-light fashion. One through a small softbox, and the other bounced into a silver umbrella. I mention this for those photographers out there following our blog.

Lighting is something we are beginning to value more and more in our photography, especially when it comes to baby shoots. Which is kind of bringing us to a bit of a dilemma. On one hand, we love producing clean, intentional shots where the lighting sparks into the baby’s eyes and the images come through sharp and well-executed. On the other hand, though, we’re worried of getting pulled in more and more into a studio style of photography. We pride ourselves in delivering documentary-style photography, especially with our family shoots. But we’ve noticed that with very young babies there is a constant tug of war we’re trying to fight with in our style.

Do we stick to our original passion of photo-journalism and find a way of making that excel with babies, or do we give in to the fact that studio lighting simply delivers a better image?

I think we want to master both, and my hope is that as we continue to progress and grow, we can blend these two styles and shape them into our own signature photography.

Madeleine & Charlotte

Madeleine is such a sweetie! We are honored we were able to dress her up in little cute outfits and take some newborn shots of her! We also snagged some photos of her older sister Charlotte as she ran around with her cute self.

To check out more cute photos of Charlotte, you’ve got to take a look at Hot Metal Studio’s photo shoots with her and her parents as they watched her grow up. Great work!

Thanks for inviting us into your home and to capture some great moments!

Newborn Session

We don’t typically do studio-style photography for family shoots, but when it comes to newborn babies, this is the way to go. We set up a couple of strobes and took some cute and colorful photos of this bright-eyed baby girl (and a few of her older sister)! This little gal was born one day apart from our own son, Phoenix!

Jim, Des & James in the Pittsburgh Fall Leaves!

It was such a pleasure being able to do photos for Jim & Des, our good friends, with their son, James, who turns one year this month! I still remember visiting them at the hospital when James was born. My, how much he’s grown since then. And the cool thing is that James has the same birth month as our boy, Phoenix. Maybe they’ll be best buds as they grow up together!

We found a nice pile of leaves and went at it with some fall fun.

Haha! Love that face by Jim!

We started our photo shoot around twilight, which made taking photos a little challenging, but also very, very rewarding!

Love you guys so much! Thanks for the opportunity to photograph your family!

For more awesome photos of this great little family, check out the photo shoot taken by Rachel Rowland about six months ago!

Family Photos at the Children’s Museum!

It’s so amazing! When you serve as a family photographer, you get to watch these little ones grow, and we’ve come to realize that time moves really, really fast. We first photographed Sydney when she was just a newborn, and now that she’s turned one, this was our third photo shoot together with her family!

This was our second shoot at the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, a great location to shoot on rainy days… which is exactly what happened to us on this day.

Love all her curious faces! Kids are such little explorers…

This water elephant was such a perfect distraction!

Aw! Look at that little stinker face!

Thanks having me come along your day together!

All About Avery!

Avery is 4 weeks old, and by far the best behaved baby I’ve photographed! Shea is such a beautiful woman and she was just glowing with love for her new baby boy. It’s been hard doing photo shoots without Michel but I love taking photos of babies and this one was a breeze…..well not much of a breeze because it was killer hot but we all got through it and the finished product were some adorable photos!

These two photos were so fun to grab because he was actually going through an array of poses…it was so cute he was like a little model!

I love the next photos with Shea and her baby boy…they are so soft and sweet and just emit so much motherly joy!

Love his little mow-hawk!

Looks like mom and dad want a future baseball player! He was actually rolling the ball around a bit which was so cute at only 4 weeks!

This little owl hat was the cutest thing I’ve seen!

Thanks so much little Avery for being such a trooper, and thanks Shea for such a great photo shoot! Hopefully we’ll get more opportunities in the future to take photos of your little guy!!

Colton welcomed into the world

Newborns have always been such a wonderful joy to photograph for me, and since Heather’s pregnancy, I’ve started to look forward to these even more. These little guys and gals are not only precious, but fragile. It’s a moment of awe trying to pose these young babies for photos.

We got to photograph Colton when he was still a baby bump, so it was cool to meet this little guy face to face.

I have to say that keeping Colton in this pose was not easy. He put up quite a fight, and he was STRONG! For being only a week and a half, he could almost lift himself up off his belly. I’ve never seen that before!

Oooh! I love his little face here! He seems so mesmerized by mom!

Peek-a-boo!

Listening to daddy’s heart…

Thanks for putting up with me little guy! Especially with all those flashing lights and lenses in your face. Hopefully you won’t put up as much of a fight next time we see you :)

Little Italian Beauties

When you see a cute little baby with such rich, dark and thick hair like that, you can probably bet she’s got some good Italian blood in her! In fact this little babe’s mom was my Italian teacher at Pitt a couple years back. It was really nice to be welcomed into her home and meet her family!

This is Sofia. Twenty-months old and runs laps around me at 21-miles-per hour. This was a rare moment when I caught her still enough for a gorgeous little portrait :)

This white fur rug was gorgeous! I would definitely love to do some more shoots with something like that in the future!

I can’t get over how much hair she had! It almost looks like a baby-sized wig! haha

Babies can really be contemplative, like they’re full of thought over every little thing they touch. I just can’t wait till we have our own little guy or gal (we don’t know the sex yet) and just admire him or her admire the world. It fills me with awe!

For any of you photographers following our work: big window lights are a gorgeous source for family and children photos! If you’re ever at a client’s house and they have big windows like this, let that glorious light in! It can give you some beautiful softness (large light source)…

Aw! Marzia, your smile is great!

hmmm… so peaceful

Oh those cheeks!

Grazie Tantissimo per l’onore di fotografare la vostra bellissima famiglia!

Sydney’s Sweet Six (months)

One of the most awesome parts about being a family photography is getting the opportunity to watch these little ones grow. We did Sydney’s newborn photos late last year, and when we stopped by again this weekend she had grown so much! The one thing that caught my attention immediately was her beautiful, shiny eyes!

You can take a look at her newborn photos if you like!

Oh and we finally got to use our newest NIKKOR 85mm F/1.4 G lens.  This beautiful glass was out of stock from both B&H & Adorama… so we purchased it from Nikon directly. I love how this lens locks down on Sydney’s pretty little eyes in all of these shots, and yet makes the surrounding look soft and dreamy!

I love this painting. And the deer fit with the theme of our last shoot.

Once she got her feeding on, Sydney was out! She slept so peacefully!

Aww! Look at that little tear. I never thought I would say this about a baby crying, but that’s adorable.

But baby toys did the trick to get her happy again!

Look at this little car! All pink and shiny. And these glasses definitely made the look!

I declare that it’s time to… Rock on, Baby! Rock on!

Watch out! You almost hit the curb!

Such a determined face working on those plastic letters…

And there they go. That’s okay. Mommy will pick them up.

Thanks guys for having us over for this shoot! Sydney is so beautiful! Next time we’ll see you guys she’ll be one year old! It’s unbelievable how quickly they grow!

Sleeping Cutie

It’s been a while since we last did a photo shoot with the Hughes family! And since then their little family has grown from three to four! We were honored to come by their house and shoot their littlest one! Unlike last time, where we got to go around the North Side of Pittsburgh, this rainy day kept us in. But no worries! Baby Eden made it easy…

Eden was definitely a precious little one! I personally think that newborn and young baby shoots are so calming! It’s great capturing these little ones sleep away…

I really liked this area rug. I hadn’t planned this shot this way until I saw Eden stretch and roll just in the right spot!

After seeing his little sister in the basket, Graham wanted in on the fun! He was an active one this day!

Kelly and Andrew had this really cool collection of coffee mugs from every place they’ve been. Of course my favorite city mug made it to the front :)

Thanks again for letting me come over! It’s always nice catching up and spending time with you guys!

Baby Eli

Baby Eli was our first newborn shoot we did in a while. His mommy and daddy wanted to get some photos done while he still had that new-born smell — er, I mean, look; so we arranged to go over their house in the evening during the week since our next few weekends are booked… The only problem with shooting at night, however, is that we don’t get to use any of that beautiful (and free) window lighting that I love using for babies. So instead it was strobist to the rescue once again. All of these shots were taken with an SB-900 through a white umbrella (for you interested photogs out there). But I wanted to keep the shots as natural as possible, so Heather brought the umbrella nice and close for most of these photos. For almost every shot, the umbrella is hovering just outside of frame.

You get to enjoy lighting so much more when you’re the one controlling it!

~Enjoy!

Originally, we didn’t catch Eli at the best time. Plus most babies don’t like a big round light flashing in their faces every few seconds, so he’d been crying through most of our early efforts. And just when we thought he was starting to like his glamor shots being taken…

So daddy brought his magic with his big comfy rocking chair. Within minutes, Eli went into a beautiful baby slumber! That’s something I’ll have to keep in mind…

And… Out!

At one point, Eli just stuck his little arm up. Which, of course, was adorable… Snapped a few photos, but as soon as I tried to tuck his left arm down, his right one came up!

That looked like a pretty comfortable pose. So we let him be for a little while…

Oh and we forgot! Eli was born just after the Super Bowl this year! Good thing you missed this one, little guy. Hopefully, on your first birthday we can celebrate together with a Steelers victory.

Hey June!

I had a great time doing a shoot of June for her six-month photos. The house had a lot of different colors and rooms to play with and wonderful window lighting to capture some nice natural shots. June’s older sisters were just as cute. Overall, I had a really enjoyable time with this family!

June’s older sisters were really loving and well behaved. They helped a lot with trying to get June to smile and giving her little kisses.

These two little sweethearts were not shy with the camera one bit!

Hugs and kisses for mommy!

Thanks again for such a wonderful shoot! You guys were really welcoming and all three of your daughters were adorable and super easy to photograph!

Always Green at the Phipps

So as winter hit the Pittsburgh Region, we met this family at the Phipps Conservatory for some gorgeous pictures of their children. These kids were so well behaved! Heather and I felt really relaxed photographing them, especially in a place filled with people like Phipps. It turned out to be a great location for family photos. Take a look!

Thanks for such a great day at Phipps! We had a really enjoyable time with you all and it was a pleasure photographing all three of your beautiful children.

Cutest Man You’ll Ever Meet—Baby J-Pat :-)

So you’ve seen many photos of the beautiful Desiree and her quirky man Jim. They are our best friends and we are so happy to see their family grow…Now meet their amazingly gorgeous son James. He came out quite the big little man and it’s amazing how in just less than 2 weeks he’s gotten bigger!! We love them so much and we were so excited to snap some shots of Baby James. You will see many many many more of this beautiful family as the years go on! And that I love.

This face below is by far the cutest face I have seen from Baby James!!! You can see him saying “Aunt Heather get that outta my face!!”

Baby James—you are gorgeous and I hope our little ones will be good friends with you later on in life!

Christmas with the Faists

Wow does time go fast when you’re photographing families! It felt like only a few photo posts ago that we photographed Ella’s newborn photos. Now she’s six months old and her older sis, Chloe, just turned two. It was such a pleasure going back to the Faist Family’s house to do photos! We feel like we’re among friends when we photograph them!

We caught some Christmas family pics and then photographed Ella’s six-month photos.

This baby room is one of my favorite places to photograph indoors. The natural lighting spilling in from the window and the white furniture make for some really bright and natural images!

Thanks again guys for having us photograph your family! You give us so many beautiful images every time we come over!

Sydney: A cutie and some props

20100930-Sydney Newborn-089

Sydney was a very peaceful baby. Her mommy had a bunch of cute little hats and hand-woven things we could incorporate into the photos. Also, she had a great strategy in getting Sydney to be so peaceful during the pictures: she made sure Sydney was well fed before I came over. We had a few burpies and a couple of “spills” but I certainly do think that was good tactics on her part!

Hey look! It’s a naked baby… it’s art!

Aww! Look at those tinsy little monkey feet! How adorable.

It’s not every day you get to take a picture of a baby with a deer head in the background.

Mommy & Daddy had so many cool things to incorporate into the photos. I loved this old-style radio and how massive it was compared to this tiny little newborn.

You were such a cutie, Sydney! We truly hope we’ll get a chance to see you grow and take more photos of you in the future!

Des, Jim and ‘da baby James!

Des and Jim are two of our best friends. We share a lot in this life together and most of the time its some of the best laughing ever. Des and Jim are expecting their first child and we are so happy for them. I know we’ll be there every step to experience it with them and love their baby James just as we love them. They are also our first “life stages” couple.  Basically photography for each stage of life. Back in winter we did a couple shoot, now a maternity, and many family photos in the future when little James gets here! Photo shoots with our friends are always the most fun because the more relaxed and comfortable we are the more relaxed and comfortable the couple/family is. And the shoots are always just so much fun. We love you guys so much and we can’t wait to meet little baby James! He’ll have the looks of mom and the dancing skills and sense of humor of dad! Perfect combo!

Rock it! Look at that sky!

Love you guys! Next shoot….baby James!!!

The Unstoppable Chloe and the Peaceful Ella

Chloe and Ella were two little sweethearts! When I first met Chloe, who just turned two, I went to shake her little hand, but instead she went straight for a big hug! I knew right away that this was going to be a good photo shoot. Her little sister is about a month old and she was so peaceful. It made it interesting because Chloe was a ball of energy while Ella just stared away and let us do our work. Both girls loved the camera! Which made it much easier for us to do what we like to do best.

Here daddy had everything ready for a diaper change, but Chloe wasn’t going to go down without a bit of a chase down.

I always love it when big brothers or sisters are cuddly with their newborn sibling. Chloe was no exception. Always ready to give some kisses and get close with a hug.

Chloe’s sandals were really cute for her to go out and play. Might as well get a shot on mommy’s lap.

Heather snapped this photo! Just an awesome shot of Chloe peeking out of her tree-house window.

So… Chloe pretty much stole the show (and our hearts) for a good part of the shoot! Ella was going through her outfit change, and I just can’t resist photographing toddlers who are as cute as Chloe.

Little Ella, surrounded by her whole family.

This is pretty much one of my favorite shots I’ve ever taken!

A word of caution to all the little boys out there, Ella knows some pretty wicked Karate moves!

Thanks Michelle & Greg (mommy & daddy) for inviting us over your house today and letting us photograph your beautiful girls! You guys were so wonderful to work with and both of your girls make for some awesome pictures! Looking forward to working with you guys again in the future!

It’s all about Lil’ Benjamin Baby

Our friends Devin & Jenn invited us over to photograph their new baby, Benjamin. This little guy was so expressive and made a bunch of faces for us to capture. It’s always interesting photographing newborns… It can either be a very calming and quiet experience, or it can be an adventure. Benjamin decided to keep us on our toes, but that was a plus because it meant we would have to take more pictures of mommy and daddy cuddling him to keep him calm.

We started off with a diaper and outfit change, and he did not like this one bit. And even though these may not be his “glamour” shots, there’s always something beautiful about little children crying, because it shows their need for parents and the gift God gave us to show grace to these little ones.

Finally in mommy’s arms, the work became easy. He had a really scrunchy face, which I loved because it revealed all of his expressive faces and moods.

This Munch-a-saurus shirt was no lie. Benjamin could munch down a bottle like I had no idea a newborn could. Besides being held by Jenn & Devin, the bottle is what kept him most appeased.

Here he is… sucking that thing down. Just you wait, that’s going to come back up later.

This basket was really a nice touch. Devin told me that Dan, their brother brought it all the from Nicaragua as a gift. It would have been cool to set Benjamin on a river and let him float Moses style. Probably not the safest idea that popped in my mind for a baby photo shoot…

There it is. I told you so. All it took was a burp or two, and it all came up. This photo was too stinking cute to resist from posting it.

A little baby and two long-legged parents. Well… at least Devin is pretty long-legged. Benjamin stretched his own little footsies to show us off some leg, too, I guess.

For some reason, I love daisies, and I think think this photo was really tender and sweet.

Surrounded by all his friends…

If you know Jack…

Last time I saw jack he was only a few days old and I just snapped a couple of photos of him in his daddy’s lap. My how he has grown! This little chunker was so stinking cute! I loved all the little faces he made, and it wasn’t too hard getting him to laugh. We were able to get a good mix of both tender and fun shots of Jack with mommy & daddy. Definitely an enjoyable shoot!

That’s the look of a Gerber Baby right there!

You can’t really ask for a better family photo than this, when even Marley, the dog, is looking at the camera!

I almost wanted to get in on the chubby-cheek-kissing fun! Look at those! How could anybody resist?

Jack loved this littler stuffed rabbit, but most of all he LOVED chewing on every limb he could grab hold of it.
